Zakynthos is one of the most important cultural centers in Greece. It is the southernmost and third in size of the Ionian islands. The main port represents the hub of economic and tourist activity. In the city, one can admire the renowned Church and Monastery of St Dionysios.
Zakynthos is a cosmopolitan island with rapid tourism development and one of the most significant cultural centers in Greece. The great number of sandy beaches and the sizeable hotel facilities are a source of attraction for many tourists during the summer months. Here, the golden beaches, the picturesque small ports, the numerous islets and the cultural monuments make up the "Fioro di Levante" (Flower of the East as the Italians used to call it).
The best known beaches of the island are the following: Argassi, Alykes, Vassilikos, Blue Caves, Gerakas, Dafni, Kalamaki, Keri, Laganas, Navagio (Shipwreck), Planos, Tsilivi and Porto Limnionas, with the majority of them being awarded with the Blue Flag by EOT (Greek National Tourism Organization).
Thanks to the high environmental awareness of the locals, large areas of the island remain intact. By taking great care not to disturb the ecosystem, they have contributed to the preservation of rare marine wild life species. Zakynthos is the breeding ground of the renowned turtle of the Mediterranean Sea, Carreta-carreta, which has been using the southern beaches of the island for millions of years.
